West Essex Board of Education Candidate Luis Hernandez Stresses ‘Kids First’ – TAPinto.net
Did you know that this Nov. 3 you will also be voting for your Board of Education Representatives?
My name is Luis Hernandez, and I am running for the West Essex Board of Education 2020, along with Danielle Tauthong.
We are running for the two open seats for representing Fairfield residents on the West Essex Regional School District’s Board of Education in the upcoming election. All registered voters of Fairfield, NJ will see our names on their ballot and can vote for both of us (Luis HERNANDEZ & Danielle TAUTHONG).
SO WHY VOTE FOR US?
- PARENTS REPRESENTING PARENTS – Currently, 1 out of 9 West Essex Board Members have a child enrolled in the district and it’s imperative for parents’ voices to be heard. To achieve a balanced vote on the board, there has to be greater parent representation. I have 3 children and first-hand understand their needs and struggles during these unprecedented times.
- NEW VOICES ON THE BOE – The 2 Fairfield BOE Representatives have been on the board for several years. It is time for a new perspective, especially during these troubling times, where parents are juggling work, activities, and virtual learning, all while attempting to keep their families safe. Critical thinking and being budget conscious is what I do as a professional and can bring those same skills to the board of education.
- COMMUNITY TRANSPARENCY – Transparency and 2-way communication should be the norm, whether it is keeping the BOE meetings virtual, recording the meetings to make them public, or whether it is listening to the community and ensuring the message is shared with the BOE. As a parent, I can truly understand and will communicate a more inclusive message to the board and back to the community.
I hold a Masters of Science in Finance degree, where I developed the expertise to conduct detailed research and generate ideas to resolve or prevent challenges in institutions, similar to our educational system. As a Portfolio Manager and Research Analyst managing $45Billion in Assets, I understand the value of coming prepared to work, but know that many times the work is to listen. Similar to the world of finance, it is imperative to benefit your team, which in this case is the parents of our district. Therefore, if the team has a strong opinion, then I will express it and fight for it.
For over a decade, I have been working with children leading a financial educational workshop to teach under privileged children the dynamics of the stock market and financial responsibility. I have seen how children excel when they are given the proper resources and attention. As a former baseball player and now youth coach, I always preach to the kids that there are three types of baseball players: those who make it happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happens. Not only do I preach this idea, but I also carry that mind-set through my actions, which is why it is natural for me to run for the Board of Education. My objective will be that every deliberation, decision, and action reflect the best interest of every student in our district.
I am proudly married to a U.S. Air Force Veteran for the past 15 years. Together we have 3 children and specifically moved to Fairfield, NJ for a better quality of life, the great school system, and sports programs. I want to have a direct impact on my children’s education; therefore, I have a genuine commitment to strive for a high-quality public education that supports the full development of all children.
