VIDEO: Breakfast with Montclair HS Teen Author Karuna Savoie: Gripping Thriller for Timely Halloween Scare
BELMAR, NJ —It go a bit spooky at the Belmar Public Library — just in time for Halloween.
And the suspense broke out at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 27. That’s when 17-year-old Karuna Savoie was featured during “Breakfast with the Author” to talk about her debut novel, “The Lore of Ramridge,” an action-packed thriller for anyone age 10 and older.
This is the first novel for Savoie, a senior at Montclair High School, who began writing after receiving a notebook as a party favor during her best friend’s birthday celebration. “On the floor of my bedroom, I began writing … I drafted enough chapters in my notebook and was proud of it, so I showed it to my English teacher,” she recalled.
She shared the back story on how she created the fast-paced adventure, which centers around a curious boy who defies his parents by going to a popular corn maze, where children are going missing. It doesn’t take long before he disappears — and the creepy craziness kicks in.
Here is Karuna Savoie in her own words about her debut novel, “The Lore of Ramridge”:
During Saturday’s hourlong event, Savoie did a reading and signed copies of her books. For every book sold, she will donate $2 to the Belmar Public Library, where she has also volunteered.
The feedback she received “was better than compliments,” she said. “My teacher took my writing seriously, despite my ideas not being serious at all. It wasn’t long before writing became a passion of mine…. I had to write.”
Savioe took on short fiction and articles on current events, as she began crafting “The Lore of Ramridge,” which was e-published before being released in paperback in August. She is working on the prequel to the novel.
The free program, which included breakfast, was held at the library’s main building, located at 517 10th Avenue. For more information, call the Belmar Public Library at 732-681-0775 or visit www.belmarlibrary.org to send a message.
