Two Millburn Committee Candidates Concede Election – Millburn, NJ Patch

MILLBURN, NJ — After the Essex County Clerk posted unofficial results Tuesday night of the Millburn elections for Township Committee and school board, two of the Township Committee candidates conceded the election in a joint statement.

On Tuesday, two Republican and two Democratic candidates had faced off for two of five seats on the town’s governing committee.

In Millburn’s form of government, candidates run each year for the five-member committee. After the members are elected by the public, the committee members choose a new mayor and deputy mayor from among themselves.

As of Tuesday night, with only some of the votes counted, Democrats Maggee Miggins and Sanjeev Vinayak were far ahead of Republican opponents Nic Volpicelli and Sujoy Menon for the two seats.

Republican candidate Nic Volpicelli said Thursday, “We want all the votes to be counted to know the final numbers, but the margin in the early voting seems too large to overcome.”

The numbers on the clerk’s website Tuesday night were:

  • Democrat Maggee Miggins, 6,151
  • Democrat Sanjeev Vinayak, 6,132
  • Republican Nic Volpicelli, 3,721
  • Republican Sujoy Menon, 3,674

(Read their profiles here.)

Volpicelli and Sujoy said in a statement, “Former Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill’s conventional wisdom says that ‘all politics is local,’ but in the highly unconventional year of 2020, the impact of national issues on New Jersey & Millburn was overwhelming. I’m proud of the locally-focused, issues-based & positive campaign Dr. Menon and I waged and sincerely thank everyone who supported us.”

They added, “Congratulations to Maggee and Sanjeev, I hope they have success on the Township Committee on behalf of all the residents of Millburn.”

As many of the ballots were mail-in or completed on paper, the final numbers may not be known until later this month.

Meanwhile, for the Millburn Board of Education race for three seats, these were the unofficial results:

  • Louie Shen (incumbent) (Maintain Excellence slate), 5,835
  • Jamie Serruto (incumbent) (Maintain Excellence), 5,997
  • Alez Zaltsman (incumbent) (Maintain Excellence), 5,869
  • Christina DiCosmo (Success, Nothing Less), 3,291

Who’s winning for president, Biden or Trump?

It’s no surprise that the Democrats were ahead in Millburn. A news article last Thursday said that residents in the Short Hills zip code had raised the second highest amount of funds for the Biden campaign of any New Jersey zip code, at $872,305. The top zip code for Trump donors was in Lakewood.

In Essex County, 77.95 percent of the votes totaled on Tuesday night were for former Vice President Joe Biden, or 206,048 votes. For President Donald Trump, 56,149 votes were cast, or 21 percent. Libertarian Jo Jorgensen amassed 941 votes, and other third party candidates and write-ins drew about 1,000 votes.

Nationally, the country was still waiting for a final tally of presidential votes. Biden and Trump appeared to be separated only by tens of thousands of votes in Nevada, Georgia, and Arizona.
