SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ – Sussex County Division of Health announced four additional coronavirus patients, one additional death and 928 recovered patients as of Wednesday, May 27.  This brings the total in the county to 1111 patients and 148 deaths related to COVID-19. 

An 83-year-old Ogdensburg woman lost her life to coronavirus, according to the division of health.

The weekend report from the department of health said the average age of a coronavirus patient is 49 years and one month, the youngest was three months and the oldest was 105 years old.

The report said 2.2% of positive cases are under the age of 20, from age 20 to 24 represents 3% of the total positive cases, 22% from 25 to 44-years-old, 18 % from 45 to 54-years-old, 24.5% ages 55 to 64, 15.5% for ages 65 to 74 and 15% for ages 75 and older. 

In Sussex County 48% of the COVID-19 related deaths are female and 52% are male. In Sussex County 51.5% of the COVID-19 positive tests are female and 48.5% are male.

Governor Murphy issued executive orders regarding child care, youth and non-professional sports and summer camps.

  • Child Care centers can reopen to children of non-essential workers on June 15,
  • Youth day camps, including municipal summer recreation programs, can open July 6,
  • Sleepaway and residential camps were not addressed in this executive order,
  • Organized youth sports practices can resume June 22, this includes high school and college sports
  • Horse racing can resume next weekend though the grandstands at state tracks will remain closed and betting will only be allowed online.
  • The issue of houses of worship limits on in-person services will be reviewed before June 12.

According to the New Jersey Department of Health COVID-19 dashboard there are 11,531 reported coronavirus deaths and 158,844 confirmed positive coronavirus cases with 716,411 reported tests.  They caution the numbers may be artificially low because of the long weekend and their experience with weekend data reporting.

Hudson County has the highest number of positive tests in the state with 18,287 coronavirus patients and 1,168 deaths.  Bergen County is reporting 18,223 positive tests and 1,567 deaths. 

Essex County is reporting the highest COVID-19 death toll with 1,647 victims and 17,546 patients.

According to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus resource center, The United States currently has 1,745,606 confirmed cases and 102,798 coronavirus deaths.  New York City has reported 29,605 COVID-19 related deaths and 65,289 recovered patients.

Sussex County Administrator Gregory Poff announced the drive through testing sight at Sussex County Community College opened on May 11.  According to reports there have been six positive cases in approximately 200 people tested.  Residents must have a prescription and be showing symptoms to be able to get an appointment.  The test is a Nasopharyngeal swab test, according to the county.  This site does not offer antibody testing, even if the resident has a prescription.

New Jersey Department of Human Services has launched a hotline for residents who need help coping with stress and anxiety during the health crisis.  The hotline is open from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. seven days a week- 866-202-4357.

St. Joseph’s Health in Paterson is also providing a free helpline for hearing impaired Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 973-870-0677.
