Student-Led March for Our Lives to Take Place in Morristown, Mar. 24
MORRISTOWN, NJ – Morristown and surrounding-area students are planning to participate in a movement called ‘March for Our Lives’ taking place on Saturday, March 24. Part of a nationwide movement to pass common-sense gun legislation in America, the students plan on gathering in several places across the state of New Jersey, including Morristown, Montclair, Maplewood, Paterson, Union and Newark.
Jaime Bedrin, regional co-organizer for Moms Demand Action, was a guest on the weekly Roundtable Radio Show on 95.1FM (Essex County) on Sunday, to discuss gun safety. Bedrin, who joined Moms Demand Action nearly five years ago, now stated that her organization has over 4 million members nationally, Since the Parkland school shooting, Bedrin stated that the interest in becoming involved in her organization has spiked.
She spoke of the march and stated that her organization has an entire campaign devoted to the theme, “Be Smart.” Bedrin organization holds assembly programs for schools, churches and others in an effort to educate the public about gun safety.
“We want to get more people to talk about gun safety in the home and to raise awareness,” said Bedrin.
In conjunction with the national March for Our Lives event in Washington D.C. there are other events planned across the state and country.
According to published announcements, March for Our Lives NJ is a student-centered, student-led event that is being planned by a diverse committee of students from various schools across New Jersey. The announcement for the event stated that the National Organization March for Our Lives New Jersey was inspired by the student-activists from Parkland, Florida who survived the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018.
March for Our Lives Morristown will begin begin at Town Hall in Morristown at 11am on Saturday with comments from Mayor Tim Dougherty and Bhimani . The route will take marchers down South Street, Right onto S. Park Place, Right onto Dumont Place, Right onto Pine Street and Left back on to South Street back to Town Hall where student speakers will address the crowd. There will also be performances by Passing Notes, an a Capella group of Montclair High School students.
The student executive committee for March for Our Lives Morristown includes Lexie Stephens, a junior at Morristown High School, Isabella Bosrock a senior at West Morris Mendham High School, Bella Bhimani, a sophomore at West Morris Mendham High School, Mia Paone a sophomore at Chatham High School, Evie Mason a sophomore at Chatham High School, Meghana Maddali, a sophomore at Morris Knolls High School, Mackenzie Robbins a student at Morris Knolls High School, Caitlyn Dempsey, a senior at Randolph High School and Brianna Arends, a senior at Randolph High School, and Natalie Gemici attends Kent Place.
In a Facebook post, the organizers stated that student volunteer ambassadors will be at the march to help out. If you have any questions or problems, look for a student ambassador dressed in an orange t-shirt. A small number of seats will be made available for anyone who requires one for medical needs. Organizers have stated that signs are permitted, however they must be made of pliable material such as cardboard.

The logo for March for Our Lives Morristown was designed by students. The colors in the hearts of the people represent the school colors of the three major shootings, with grey being the common thread between them.
The following is the mission statement of March for Our Lives Morristown; “Our schools are unsafe. Our children and teachers are dying. We must make it our top priority to save these lives. March For Our Lives Morristown is student led. In the tragic wake of the seventeen lives brutally cut short in Florida, politicians are telling us that now is not the time to talk about guns. However, we believe the time is now. School safety is not a political issue. There cannot be two sides to doing everything in our power to ensure the lives and futures of children who are at risk of dying when they should be learning, playing, and growing.The mission and focus of March For Our Lives Morristown is to demand that a comprehensive and effective bill be immediately brought before Congress to address these gun issues. We live in fear, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Change is coming. And it starts now, inspired by and led by the kids who are our hope for the future. Our young voices will be heard.
