Stimulus check update: Where is my payment? – NJ.com
The federal government started to send out stimulus payments from the $1.9 trillion relief package over the weekend.
But not everyone will get the payments at the same time. Those who will receive checks or debit cards will see their payments in the coming weeks, but the IRS hasn’t yet said how many payments it has sent or on what specific dates they will go out.
The payments that arrived over the weekend went to some of the people for whom the agency has direct deposit information. But not everyone has received the deposits yet, and some who did said the funds remained in “pending” status.
Chase said on its website that its direct deposited payments won’t be available in accounts until Wednesday at the earliest. Wells Fargo said the same in a Twitter post.
You can track your payment with the IRS’ Get My Payment tool. It will show you how you payment will be sent, a payment date and whether or not the payment has been processed.
The IRS said your stimulus payment may come in a different form than the first two payments. If you received a paper check, you could receive a debit card this time, the IRS said. And if you received a card previously, you may get a check this time.
The agency said most people will get their payments automatically, including those who used the agency’s Non-filer tool last year.
It has not yet announced when people who do not file a tax return but receive federal benefits, such as Social Security, disability or veteran benefits, will get their payments. The payments should come in the form that people receive their federal benefits, the IRS said.

If you haven’t received the two stimulus payments that were issued in 2020, or if you think you were due a larger payment than you received, you will need to file a 2020 tax return even if you don’t usually file one.
The first payment was up to $1,200 per eligible person and up to $500 per qualifying child. The second payment was up to $600 per eligible person and $600 per qualifying child.
“For 2021, eligible taxpayers who did not receive the full amount can claim it as the Recovery Rebate Credit when they file their 2020 tax return,” the IRS said. “Use IRS Free File to file and claim this important benefit.”
