South Orange Police and Fire Departments to Celebrate Town Birthdays With Mini-Parades – TAPinto.net

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — The South Orange Police and Fire Departments are coming together to cheer up local kids who cannot have birthday parties during social distancing. The first responders are offering children with April birthdays a mini parade in front of their home.

Community Relations Officer Adrian Acevedo of the SOPD said that other towns are starting the practice and Village President Sheena Collum came to him with the idea of implementing it locally. “I’ve got to give credit to Sheena for suggesting we do it,” he said. The offer is for children turning 10 and under.

The hearty response to the public announcement this morning took Acevedo by surprise. “I’ve had to create two extra mailboxes,” he said, to stay organized with the requests. Acevedo said he received some 40 emails in the first four hours after the email announcement went out to the residents. He said he is happy to organize this treat for the residents, and the departments will try to fulfill each request as long as nothing urgent is happening at the appointed day and time of each birthday parade.
