Re: “Seton Hall University Begins Academic Year with First-Day Furry Friends
Animals enrich our lives, of that there is no doubt. But animals should not be subjected to streams of groping hands and constant handling so students can be distracted from their studies and stress for a few minutes.
The bunnies, chicks, goats, sheep, cow and other animals used in the petting zoo aren’t stuffed toys; they are sensitive animals who can be afraid and anxious at all the commotion. Being held and petted by crowds of people is not in their best interests, nor is being trucked around from one venue to the next.
There is just no excuse for continuing to exploit animals in these kinds of displays. Students who don’t think that animals should be treated like wind-up toys should make their objections known to the Student Activities Board. Students who care about animals can visit https://www.peta.org/students/ to learn more.
