Saint Barnabas NJ’s Only Hospital to Achieve Straight ‘A’s for 13 Years

LIVINGSTON, NJ – Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC), an RWJBarnabas Health facility located in Livingston, recently became the only hospital in New Jersey and one of only 49 nationwide to receive a 13th consecutive ‘A’ from The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit Hospital Watchdog organization that initiated this program in 2012.

Leah Binder, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of The Leapfrog Group, said that only a very select group of hospitals nationally continue to earn an A Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade year after year. Thanking SBMC for always putting the patients first, Binder added that this distinction “shows an unbroken commitment to protecting patients from preventable errors and accidents that harm and even kill too many people in our country every day.”

“As we continue on our journey of becoming a High Reliability Organization, earning the Leapfrog recognition for 13 consecutive cycles is a tremendous accomplishment that reflects hard-wired processes and dedication from every team member at SBMC,” said Stephen Zieniewicz, FACHE, president and CEO of SBMC. “Safety is a core value and our No. 1 priority. Receiving an ‘A’ grade reflects our commitment to providing the safest quality care to our patients and their families.”

The Safety Grade assigns letter grades of A, B, C, D and F to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms. Developed under the guidance of an Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to approximately 2,500 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is peer reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.
