Coin Shortage Inspires Madison’s Troop 7 to Launch Coin Drive Fundraiser
MADISON – Our country is facing a national coin shortage as a result of lower levels of production of coins due to COVID-19. This shortage, which has made it challenging for businesses, inspired Troop 7 to organize a coin drive fundraiser. Donated coins will be counted and returned to circulation and the proceeds will help fund equipment and troop activities.
The coin collection will take place Sunday November 22nd, weather permitting, at the parking lot of St. Vincent Martyr Church. COVID protections will be in place to make donating safe. This coin drive is a great way to get rid of the coins laying around your house, help Troop 7, and enable our local businesses get access to coins.
Maria Slabaugh, Troop 7 Committee Chair stated: “With our normal fundraising activities curtailed due to COVID, we asked the Troop to come up with some new ideas. When the coin drive was suggested the Scouts overwhelmingly chose this, both as something fun and new, and because of the patriotic aspect of doing something to help with the national coin shortage”.
Despite the pandemic, Troop 7 has continued to meet virtually initially and in person more recently, continuing to work on advancements, and having fun COVID-friendly outdoor events.
Troop 7 Scoutmaster Martin Gurney shared: “The Scouts wanted to stay connected despite the pandemic and we met all summer virtually, working on advancements and even having camp-ins, where Scouts camped in their backyards and joined a Zoom call for sing-alongs, skits and more. We’re now meeting in person outside and doing fun activities like our recent hike on the Stairway to Heaven trail in Vernon. Troop 7 is an important way to help our Scouts get through a difficult time”.
Troop 7 has a long history in Madison and was first organized in the 1920’s and has awarded the rank of Eagle Scout to nearly 70 Scouts in the last 50 years. Annually, Troop 7 Scouts volunteer for an average of 8,000 total hours, giving back to the Madison Community.
