On Friday, law enforcement officials executed a search warrant at Lewis’ home at 21 Lackawanna Plaza. Police seized a 9 mm Glock handgun reported stolen out of North Carolina, a .40 caliber Glock handgun, 50 heroin-filled envelopes stamped “Steel City” in red ink, 15.6 grams of crack-cocaine, nine Xanax tablets, $800 in cash and a “variety of drug packaging and processing paraphernalia.”
Police in Elizabeth allegedly saw a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee – with Lewis as a passenger – chasing another vehicle on the evening of Sept. 20. Lewis was holding a rifle at the time, authorities said.
Elizabeth police pursued the Jeep into Newark, but lost the vehicle on Frelinghuysen Avenue. The Jeep was later found abandoned on Van Vechten Street in Newark with an AR-15 rifle inside, authorities said.
Lewis was charged with possession of a weapon while committing a narcotics crime, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of a large capacity ammunition magazine and receiving stolen property. He was also charged with three counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, two counts of possession of CDS with intent to distribute, possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of Watsessing Park and possession of narcotics paraphernalia.
A law enforcement task force with detectives from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office and the Bloomfield and Elizabeth police departments conducted the investigations that led to the charges against Lewis, authorities said.
