Parents of N.J. student who poked eye until he was blind settle lawsuit with district – NJ.com

The parents of a middle school student who rubbed and poked his eye until he damaged the cornea and lost vision in his left eye have agreed to settle a claim against the Montclair School District for $62,500 and placement of the child in a private school.

Court papers state the child, who is identified by his initials, came to a district middle school in December 2017 with an Individualized Education Plan, or “IEP,” which are written guidelines instructing teachers on how to work with a special education student.

Prior to attending the school, the child had been diagnosed with autism, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression and other medical issues, according to a settlement filed on June 21 in Superior Court of Essex County.
