Parents Dumping Public School For Private, Nutley Republican Says
NUTLEY, NJ — Sending your kids to private or religious institutions – or teaching them at home – may be a “great alternative” to public schools, an Essex County Republican and Trump campaign supporter says.
On Sunday, Nutley Commissioner Steven Rogers, the chairman of the New Jersey Trump-Pence 2020 Campaign, posted a Twitter statement about a recent discussion he had with “numerous parents.”
Rogers, an active social media user who wields his Twitter account with the same enthusiasm as President Trump, had this to say about public vs. private schools:
“Met with numerous parents yesterday. Many are taking their children out of public schools and investing in private, parochial, or homeschooling. These are great alternatives. I recommend parents research them. Get facts, you might be pleasantly surprised about these alternatives.”
Rogers hasn’t pulled punches when it comes to expressing his opinions about several hot-button topics, including issues affecting local schools (view some of his Twitter posts about education below).
The Republican has advocated for bringing armed police and junior ROTC programs into public schools, and went on record in opposition of the national school walkouts against gun violence in March, calling them “anti-Second Amendment events” that used children as “political props.”

When speaking to parents in NYC on Friday about alternatives to public schools, one of them mentioned that bringing Jr. ROTC programs into public schools would be an asset that would strengthen their children’s education. I agree! What do you think?

Last night it was my pleasure to attend the Nutley Fellowship of Christian Athletes fundraiser. Looks like about 500 parents attended. Nutley parental involvement with their children is the strength of our school system. A role model of all to follow.

For two months I have been talking with college students who requested to sit with me at a round table discussion about recent news events. I have agreed to this request and we plan to meet soon. I will keep you posted. Dialogue is important. I commend them for reaching out!

I find it interesting that many elected officials on school boards in NJ opposed to armed police in schools own weapons for home & self protection. Need I say more? The most powerful weapon is in the hands of the people. It’s called a vote. Remember in Nov. I will!! #MAGA

Will be speaking to state legislators to pass legislation taking the power to provide school security away from local school boards and to establish a uniform mandated school security protocol that’s includes police personnel in schools. Stay tuned!

Making America Great Again starts at the school board level. It’s time to defeat school board members unwilling to listen to the parents of the children their decisions affect. AWC is now interviewing candidates in NJ. Contact michelle@awcnj.us for details.

I hope that school districts use their heads & not support any school walkouts. This protest that is coming is an anti-Second Amendment event. We taxpayers pay for our children to be educated in school, not to be used as political props by special interest groups. Stay tuned!
