Ocean man charged with shooting two others in Freehold then taking off – wobm.com

An Ocean Township man faces a couple decades in prison after being arrested and charged with two counts of first degree attempted murder in a shooting incident that took place at the Continental Apartment Complex in Freehold Borough on March 30.

Monmouth County Prosecutor Chris Gramiccioni announced Wednesday that Joseph Lyons, 36, has also been charged with one count of second degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and one count of second degree unlawful possession of weapon.

Two men were found suffering from gunshot wounds around 8:00 pm on March 30 and were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries and later released from medical care.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and Freehold Borough Police ran an investigation that led them to identifying Joseph Lyons as the man who shot two others and then fled the area.

He was arrested by the United States Marshals Regional Task Force and Freehold Borough Police and now sits in the Monmouth County Correctional Institution awaiting his First Appearance in court and Detention Hearing.

Lyons faces up to 20 years in prison on each count of attempted murder if convicted subject to the provisions of the “No Early Release Act” which means he would have to serve 85 percent of the sentence imposed before becoming eligible for release on parole.

He would also be under parole supervision for five years following his release from state prison.

If convicted of the weapons offenses, Lyons faces up to 10 years in prison with a mandatory minimum parole ineligibility of 42 months pursuant to the Graves Act.

If you have any information on this shooting, you should call Detective Daniel Newman of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office at 1-800-533-7443 or Freehold Borough Police Detective Richard Schwerthoffer at 732-462-1233.

You can send in information anonymously to Monmouth County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-671-4400 or via their free P3 Tips mobile app (available for iOS and Android – https://www.p3tips.com/community/index.htm).
