Nutley Man Charged After Police Pursuit That Injured Five including Belleville Police

NEWARK, NJ – A 21 year old Nutley man was charged Friday May 4 in connection with a police pursuit that resulted in injuries to four Belleville police officer and a civilian.

According to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert. D. Laurino, Belleville Police saw an individual driving an ATV (all terrain vehicle) on Washington Ave. in Belleville at about 10 p.m. Thursday May 3. The police tried to stop the individual, but he refused to stop. Police called for back up and pursued the vehicle. 

The ATV came to a stop after colliding with a car driven by a civilian in the area of Greylock Parkway and Washington Ave injuring the civilian. Two of the police vehicles that were responding to the area collided with each other, injuring four officers. The four officers in the police cars were taken to University Hospital and the civilian was taken to another area hospital. All five had non-life threatening injuries and were treated and released.

Wilfredo A. Soto, 21, of Nutley was arrested and charged with five counts of aggravated assault, second degree eluding, contempt and various motor vehicle offenses. 

Consistent with Attorney General guidelines, the matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office because it involves a police pursuit. The investigation is active and ongoing. No additional information is available now.
