Nutley Commissioners honor Barry A. Kozyra with Proclamation – TAPinto.net

NUTLEY, NJ – The Nutley Board of Commissioners presented a proclamation to resident Barry A. Kozyra during an township public meeting. Kozyra is the recipient of the 2018 Professional Lawyer of the Year award by the Essex County Bar Association and New Jersey Commission on Professionalism in the Law.

The award was presented at the NJ Commission’s Professionalism Awards Luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Pines Manor in Edison.

The Professional Lawyer of the Year award is presented, in cooperation with bar associations across New Jersey to lawyers who are respected by their colleagues for their character, competence and exemplary professional behavior. Kozyra also earned the 2018 Elks Citizen of the Year award for his outstanding and meritorious service to humanity and charitable causes.

He was also recipient of the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Service to the Bar award and the Essex County Bar Association’s General Practice Achievement award.  Kozyra was named as a 2005 and 2006 “Super Lawyer” in the Super Lawyers Magazine.

Mayor and Public Works Commissioner Joseph P. Scarpelli said, “As our long time Planning Board attorney we appreciate the hard work you put in. …It’s a lot of hard work and effort and we don’t always get compensated the way we should…”

Revenue and Finance Commissioner Thomas J. Evans said, “I can’t think of many people that you never hear about getting any recognition buy who deserve to get much more than they actually get.”

Parks and Recreation Commissioner Mauro G. Tucci said, “It is very well deserved, not only for what you do for Nutley but for what you do throughout the county and the state.”

Public Safety Commissioner Alphonse Petracco said, “The one thing I always admire about yourself and anybody, when you start from humble beginnings and to wind up in the seat that you are in …to me means everything.”

Public Affairs Commissioner Steven L. Rogers said, “I know full well that it is a very difficult task that you have accomplished…I know you work hard, I know you work long hours. I’ve gotten some of your emails on Saturday’s Sundays, night and day; you’re a truly dedicated servant.”

Kozyra thanked the commissioners for the honor and said, “Those of you who know me, know I work hard. My word is my bond. I’ll tell you I’m going to do something I try to do it.”

Kozyra is a graduate of the University of Chicago, where he received a bachelor’s of arts degree with honors in American history in 1975 and Rutgers Law School in Newark, where he received his juris doctorate in 1978. He is admitted to the bars in New Jersey and New York, the Second, Third and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeal and the United States Supreme Court and has handled federal and state litigation at both the trial and appellate levels.

He is a member of the American Bar Association, the New Jersey State Bar Association, and the Essex County Bar Association, where he served as chairman of the Criminal Law Section from 1988 to 1989.

Kozyra is an attorney for Nutley’s Planning Board where he also served as a member. He is a mediator for the New Jersey State Chancery and Law Divisions of the Superior Court, Discovery Master, statutory receiver and special fiscal agent for the New Jersey State Superior Court Chancery Division, federal arbitrator and federal mediator for the United States District Court of New Jersey, panelist in the Essex County Family and Chancery Early Settlement Programs, Essex County contract arbitrator and an Essex County condemnation commissioner.

He also serves as a trustee of the Board of Trustees of the Legal Services Corporation of New Jersey and president of the Filomena Coppola Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc.

He was former Chairman of the St. Clare Church Finance Committee from 2007 to 2013 and former Chancellor of the Nutley Historical Society..

Kozyra lives in Nutley with his wife Cheryl Peduto Kozyra and they have two daughters, Jillian and Alexandra.
