NJ Weather: Heat, bad air and rip currents return – Asbury Park Press

MOUNT HOLLY – It’s going to be another hot, muggy day, with bad air hovering over half the state and rip currents tugging at the Jersey Shore, according to the National Weather Service.

The state Department of Environmental Protection issued a code orange air quality alert for Bergen, Camden, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Union and northwestern and southeastern Burlington counties beginning 10 a.m. Tuesday, according to the NWS.

“A code orange air quality alert means that air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups,” according to the NWS. Those groups include children, the elderly and asthma, heart and lung patients.

A heat advisory covered Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties, set to begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday and last until 9 p.m., according to the NWS. The heat index was likely to hit 95 degrees.
