Nighttime COVID Street Closures Planned For Newark’s East Ward – Patch.com

NEWARK, NJ — Newark officials will close streets leading into the East Ward of the city on Friday and Saturday nights in an attempt to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

According to the Newark Public Safety Department, the street closures will take place from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.

“Residents who live in the affected area, namely zip code 07105, will be allowed to travel to address essential needs,” officials said. “Proof of area residency or proof that an essential need is being addressed will be required.”

The area was one of several Newark neighborhoods recently targeted for nighttime curfews due to rising COVID-19 case numbers. There is currently a 9 p.m. weekday and 10 p.m. weekend curfew in effect for the following areas of the city:

  • In 07104, the boundaries are 7th Avenue to 2nd Avenue and from Broadway to Clifton Avenue
  • In 07105, this is the entire area, not including the airport or the highways
  • In 07107, the boundaries are 3rd Avenue North to Berkley Avenue. North 3rd Street to 11th Street

Other recent COVID crackdowns in Newark affect sports, large gatherings, visitation in senior housing, religious services and local businesses.

Mayor Ras Baraka asked residents to “stay at home” for a 10-day period over the Thanksgiving holiday to help slow the spread of the virus.
