Newark Police Release Video After Child Shot; $5K Reward Offered – Newark, NJ Patch
NEWARK, NJ — Newark authorities are offering a $5,000 reward to help find the person or persons responsible for a multiple shooting that wounded three people last week, including a young girl.
The Newark Police Department’s crime stoppers program is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of a suspect, authorities announced Wednesday.
Newark police arrived at the scene of the shooting at 11:10 p.m., which took place near the 100-block of Cabinet Street on Jan. 28. They found three injured people: an adult man, an adult woman and a 2-year-old girl.
Officers rushed the child to University Hospital, where the other two victims were also taken. All three are reportedly in stable condition, police said Wednesday.
Newark police released harrowing bodycam footage taken at the scene, which can be viewed here. WARNING: Video contains graphic/disturbing content.
The video footage shows officers rushing frantically to help the victims.
“Put her in here … please!” an officer shouts to a person carrying the wounded child, pointing to the open door of a police cruiser.
“Our major crimes detectives are actively searching for any suspects involved in this senseless shooting, which could have cost this child her life in a split second,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said.
“Thankfully, she is still with us,” Ambrose added. “We’re hopeful that offering a reward will result in someone coming forward with information to help us identify the suspects and prevent them from committing more violence against our neighbors.”
Anyone with information about the incident can call the division’s 24-hour crime stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). Anonymous tips can also be made using the police division’s website at: www.newarkpd.org, or through its smartphone app.
“Another tragedy has hit our community by way of gun violence,” Mayor Ras Baraka said last week, speaking in the wake of the shooting.
The mayor said he’s asking Newark police to “work around the clock” to find whoever is responsible.
“We will not rest until we have these shooters in custody,” Baraka said.
