NEWARK — A city man is accused of critically injuring a 2-year-old girl in a vehicle he drove and then fleeing the scene Sunday, authorities said.

Romane Errol Sr., 26, faces charges including serious bodily injury and operating without a valid license, said Catherine Adams of the Newark Police Department. Errol was driving with a suspended and expired license, officials said.

Police responded before 9:45 a.m. when the 2-year-old girl was struck in a hit-and-run at Brookdale and 18th avenues.

The child was taken to University Hospital with rib fractures, double collapsed lung and lung lacerations, Adams said.

Errol remains in the Essex County Correctional Facility, authorities said.
