NEWARK, NJ — A Newark man driving without a valid license hit and critically injured a 2-year-old girl with his pickup truck in Newark on Mother’s Day, authorities said.
Emergency responders transported the child to University Hospital with serious injuries, including rib fractures, double collapsed lung and lung lacerations. She is in critical condition, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.
Police arrested the driver of the truck, Romane Errol, 26, of Newark. His driver’s license was suspended and expired at the time of the crash, authorities said.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the incident took place at 9:40 a.m. near the intersection of 18th and Brookdale Avenue. At that time, Errol – who was driving a 2008 Chevrolet pickup truck – struck the child with his vehicle.
He left the scene of the crash without stopping, prosecutors said.
