N.J. school closings, schedule changes due to major winter storm. Who’s getting a snow day? (Thursday, Dec. 1 – NJ.com

With a major winter storm hitting New Jersey, districts around the state have started announcing school closures and other schedule changes, including for some schools that are currently virtual only or a mix of in-person and online classes due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

The forecast varies greatly depending on where you are in the state. Northern New Jersey is likely to see at least a foot of snow, forecasters have said, while southern New Jersey could get only rain. The area of the state along I-95 remains a toss up, with snow and sleet possible.

The snow will likely continue through mid-morning on Thursday.

Power outages are also a concern, with heavy, wet snow predicted and strong winds statewide, including the potential for 60 mph gusts closer to the shore.

For some schools, the weather will have no effect on the school day, as more districts use virtual learning options during the coronavirus pandemic. A number of districts have decided to stick with virtual learning during the storm while others that have some in-person classes have decided to continue with all virtual during the storm, saying there’s no reason students can’t log in from home.

For other districts, the decision to call a snow day centers around a time-honored tradition.

“Please encourage your children to play in the snow,” Vernon superintendent Karen D’Avino said in announcing the district’s commitment to snow days during virtual learning.
