For the mayor of Newark – where the largest number of registered Democrats in the state reside – Joe Biden’s projected win over President Donald Trump on Saturday was a moment of change.

“Creating a new normal grounded in social, racial and economic justice is arguably the greatest challenge we face,” Mayor Ras Baraka said in a statement. “The new president and vice president we have elected are leaders who can meet that challenge.”

The Associated Press projected Biden and his vice presidential pick, U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris, the winners of Pennsylvania, pushing the Democratic ticket to secure the presidency. The results came four days after Nov. 3 this year in a historic election where voters cast provisional and mail-in ballots because of the coronavirus.

Residents in New Jersey hit the streets to celebrate the Democratic ticket’s projected win.

In Montclair, a progressive suburb in Essex County, residents lined Grove Street with Biden-Harris signs on their front lawns, holding up American flags and signs asking passing motorists to honk.

“It’s like a huge weight has been lifted,” said Brian McGaughan, a 37-year-old and registered Democrat, who was standing barefoot on a curb with his wife, son and daughter.

“I’m very, very relieved,” said his wife, Mary McGaughan, also 37. “I feel like I have a parent now, a responsible parent, in my government.”

There was lots of honking, flag-waving and cheering in Mapelwood’s downtown, too. Queen’s “We Are the Champions” blasted from a car and residents started singing along.

“We did it!” yelled one man over the sound of cowbells as he held a Biden sign.

Rev. Dr. Charles Boyer, who has been outspoken on police accountability, said also lauded the Biden campaign’s win.

Garden State Equality’s Christian Fuscarino tweeted, “Donald, you’re fired,” using a catchphrase the president said during his reality TV days on “The Apprentice.” He also noted the historic moment of electing Harris.
