Morristown High School Names Leana Fahmy as NY Jets “Upstander of the Week”; Week 7
MORRISTOWN, NJ – For the 2nd consecutive year, Morristown High School is participating in the New York Jets “Upstander of the Week” Program. In order to be chosen, students must encourage positive dialogue among their peers and work to ensure that all students are respected and valued as members of the MHS community,
This week, Leana Fahmy was chosen for Upstander of the Week. She was described as a “wonderful student, good friend, and all around example of the type of student we are proud to have at Morristown High School.” She was nominated, however, due to her dedicated work, 2 afternoons per week, with the Unified Swim Team. She demonstrates a “caring, patient, and accepting manner at every practice.” She “goes out of her way to make the athletes feel welcome and part of the team.” Nurse Lauren Moreno commented that it was “truly amazing that she was only a teenager” and that she “deserved the award!”
For each of 16 weeks during the 2018 NFL season, staff members will nominate students who demonstrate upstanding qualities of character similar to the Heart of the Colonial (i.e. kind, hard-working, responsible, honest, and respectful). One student will be selected each week and he/she will be honored with a special T-shirt, parent bumper sticker, 3 tickets to a home NY Jets game, and a parking pass.
“This program affords us the opportunity to highlight the positive contributions so many of our students make to our school and to our community”, said Morristown High School Principal Mark Manning. “I want to extend my appreciation to the Jets organization for their willingness to partner with us to recognize some of our amazing students at MHS”.
Schools who fully participate in the program may receive a visit by New York Jets players. Last year, Morristown High School was a finalist during the 2017 season
Through the outreach program, the New York Jets have directly reached 9,000 students through school visits, distributed over 1,250 Educator Toolkits with the potential to impact more than 430,000 students, and they have donated more than $200,000 to Stomp Out Bullying during their Anti-Bullying Awareness Gamedays at Met Life Stadium.
