Montclair School Custodian Sexually Assaulted Teen: Prosecutors – Montclair, NJ Patch

MONTCLAIR, NJ — A custodian at an elementary school in Montclair has been accused of repeatedly engaging in sex acts with a teen, authorities said.

Stephen A. Yekel, 47, of Lake Hiawatha, allegedly had sexual relations with the teen in “various locations” on multiple dates from October 2016 to October 2018, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

The incidents took place when the victim was 14-years-old and continued until she was 16, prosecutors said.

The victim has no connection to the Montclair Public School District, Interim Superintendent Nathan Parker wrote in a letter to the community, TAP Into reported.

Police arrested Yekel on Jan 23. He was charged with three counts of second-degree sexual assault and three counts of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

Yekel is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Feb. 3, prosecutors said.

Yekel is listed as the head custodian at Northeast Elementary on the district’s website. Parker told NorthJersey.com that Yekel is no longer working in the district.
