Montclair Man Flees Cops After Dispute With Rideshare Driver: PD – Montclair, NJ Patch
ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A Montclair man tried to flee from police and throw away a gun after getting into an argument with a rideshare driver in Glen Ridge early Friday morning, authorities said.
According to the Glen Ridge Police Department, an officer responded to the 900-block of Bloomfield Avenue at 1:13 a.m. The driver said they got into a dispute with a passenger over the fare. During the argument, the passenger – later identified as Ahmad Daniels, 25 of Montclair – allegedly motioned that he had a gun.
Daniels got out of the vehicle and left the scene after the dispute. The driver wasn’t injured, authorities said.
Here’s what happened next, according to police:
“[Officers] located [Daniels] walking on Bloomfield Avenue near Hurrell field. While speaking with officers, [Daniels] was acting suspiciously and when questioned about the incident, [he] took off running across Bloomfield Avenue towards Freeman Parkway in an attempt to flee from the officers. [Officers] chased after [Daniels] and while doing so, observed him throwing several items from his backpack and discard them over the Freeman Parkway Bridge. The foot chase continued east on Woodland Avenue and [Daniels] was soon apprehended in that area by the officers without further incident.”
Police arrested Daniels and recovered a loaded handgun at the scene.
Authorities charged Daniels with possession of a weapon, possession of hollow point bullets, possession of an extended magazine, resisting arrest and persons not to be in possession of a firearm.
The Glen Ridge Police Department is investigating the incident, authorities said.
