Man charged in killing of grocery store owner shot at his N.J. business – NJ.com

A 24-year-old man was charged with murder in the shooting death of a Newark grocery store owner, authorities said Friday.

Quadree Richardson also faces weapons-related offenses after Rabel Ramos-Gomez was shot while working at his corner store on the 200 block of South 10th Street in Newark, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Ramos-Gomez, 46, of Belleville, was killed around 4 p.m. Sunday at R & A Supermarket in a violent weekend that saw a total of nine people shot within 25 hours in the state’s largest city. Prosecutors have not commented on a possible motive for the slaying, but relatives described Ramos-Gomez as apparently hit by stray bullet.

The shop owner’s sister-in-law, Marisol Mendez, told WABC-TV she was at the store when gunfire erupted as Ramos-Gomez was cooking in the back. The shooting did not stem from a robbery, she told the station.

Family members launched a GoFundMe for Ramos-Gomez’s children, according to the online fundraiser.

“He went to work on a Sunday morning and will never return home,” the post said.

“A tragedy, he was working at the store with … family members when suddenly gun fire came into the store from a shooting outside and one bullet killed an innocent victim, such a good man,” the GoFundMe page stated.

Anyone with information about the shooting can call the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432.
