Legislative District 28 – NJ Spotlight

NJ Spotlight is sharing election coverage with NJTV News, our sister organization, which invited all candidates to complete a brief survey and record a video message; we have included those for all the candidates who responded.

The 28th District covers four Essex County communities — Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, Irvington, and Nutley — and a portion of Newark.

A  majority “blue” district, about 52% of its voters are Democrats, with only 8% Republican and most of the rest unaffiliated.

The Democratic candidates are the incumbents, Assembly members Cleopatra Tucker of Newark and Ralph Caputo of Nutley, both of whom are seeking re-election.

The Republican challengers are Joy Bembry-Freeman of Newark and Antonio Pires of Nutley.

One independent also filed, Derrick Ross of Newark, who is running under the slogan Strength in Numbers.
