Law Firm, Hammerman Rosen LLP, Celebrates Third Year in Fairfield and Accolades

FAIRFIELD, NJ — Exemplifying a new age of attorneys, Marvin Hammerman and Matthew Rosen of the boutique law firm Hammerman Rosen LLP in Fairfield go above and beyond to provide effective and affordable legal counsel to the Essex County, New Jersey area. Both were selected this year to Super Lawyer’s Rising Stars list, for Civil Litigation and Family Law respectively. Additionally, among other accolades, Hammerman was named a Top 40 Under 40 Attorney by National Trial Lawyers, and Rosen was named a Top Attorney by Morris/Essex Magazine.*
Hammerman, a Montclair resident originally from Mountain Lakes, and Rosen, a Randolph resident, are in the firm’s third year of operation and have already handled more than 400 client matters. The duo described their partnership as being part of a class of young professionals more interested in their clients than the bottom line. Whether this means making house calls or taking late-night calls or text messages, Hammerman and Rosen strive to understand their clients’ unique situations and goals, and to pursue a tailored, cost-effective resolution to their clients’ needs.
According to Hammerman, the firm had nearly $1 million* in value recovered for its clients in year one. In keeping with this upward trajectory, their goal for year three is to continue making a positive impact on every case they touch and to continue to grow their reputation and client base.
Although a financial goal in the near future includes continuing to land larger business clients and higher profile cases, the firm intends to continue covering everyday law cases—from real estate closings to contested estate litigation, from car accidents to criminal defense, and all types of family law cases.
Hammerman said that instead of trying to ruthlessly bill each client, he and Rosen are committed to their value proposition—understanding and resolving the client’s issues in the most cost-effective way. According to Hammerman, “successfully resolving cases is what generates reputation and client referrals, and the best marketing is having clients that leave highly satisfied with our service, and their results.” Not only does the firm boast a large number of return clients, but many also consider Hammerman and Rosen their family attorneys, and constantly refer the firm to other friends or family members.
“We’re two New Jersey natives who went to law school and through hard work and dedication, coupled with our entrepreneurial spirit, were able to start a law firm and are truly giving back to our community,” said Rosen. “We could have followed our peer group and moved to New York or DC, but it’s a real privilege to have established a law firm where we grew up.”
The firm described its practice as being modeled in part after Hammerman’s father’s medical practice.
“You call your primary care physician when you’re sick, you should have a primary care attorney for when you believe you have a legal issue,” said Hammerman. “We want to be the attorneys you trust to call whenever an issue arises, whether it’s a motor vehicle accident or any other type of dispute or potential legal matter.”
Hammerman Rosen also boasts that it will never charge for an initial consultation.
Both only five years out of law school, Hammerman and Rosen have developed valuable experience both from the variety of cases they have successfully handled for their firm, and from their previous larger law firm positions with prominent New Jersey firms. Rosen said they are currently in a niche where they are old enough to know the experienced lawyers in the area should they need advice, yet they can still connect on a more meaningful level with their younger clients.
“We’re doing real law for everyday people that need the confidence to go to court to get what they deserve,” said Rosen. “We think there’s both a value proposition with us, and we have developed a network of trusted attorneys to send the more specialized matters. We want everyone who comes through our door to feel like we either sent them in the right direction or we solved their issue(s).”
Hammerman said that last month saw the firm working on all sorts of matters from contract disputes, complex estate litigation, land-lord tenant, personal injury, car accident and other civil litigation to family courts for custody, child support, visitation, divorce and post-judgment matters. Additionally, the firm also handles criminal defense and municipal court matters, such as disorderly persons offenses and traffic offenses.
Rosen, who lived in Peru for two years and is now fluent in Spanish, said his most rewarding cases are the pro-bono divorce cases he handles for the organization “Unchained at Last,” which helps women escape arranged marriages. In fact, he recently spoke to a room full of lawyers at a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) event about forced and arranged marriages.
“I have the strong belief that my family-law clients are better off spending their money on their children than they are giving their money to me,” said Rosen. “Because of that, we are very fair with our clients in terms of the money aspect of the business. Our goal is not to get the next dollar from the client—it’s to get the next referral from the client.”
Hammerman, who can also speak Spanish, said the language has given them an advantage in the legal world. Rosen, who wrestled in high school, and Hammerman, who is an avid Chess and tennis player, said law is not always a win-or-lose sport, and that often with creativity, shared value creation can settle cases favorably.
Hammerman likened his litigation practice to chess, noting that they bring out his competitive and strategic nature, and that he immerses himself in each case, strategizing and rethinking the approach, and always trying to stay ahead of the opposition.
Between Hammerman’s attention to detail and Rosen’s emotional investment in his work, the two attorneys feel strongly that they can provide large-firm-quality representation, with a small-firm personalized approach. Hammerman and Rosen both consistently receive five-star reviews on a variety of online platforms, including Avvo.com, a national attorney database, and other sites like Facebook, Yelp and Google. Common feedback for both attorneys includes their speed, reliability, problem solving, compassion and fairness.
“We have story after story of favorable results for our clients that other attorneys might have charged ten times as much for to get the same result,” said Rosen “We’re proud of our mission and what we accomplish—we consistently achieve favorable results for our clients, and it shows on the feedback we receive about our clients’ experience with us.”
