Berkeley Twsp., NJ – Joseph Harry Anderson, 93, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2021 surrounded by the love of his “Lucky Seven” family.
Joseph graduated from Newark State College with a BS in Education and received his Master’s Degree in Education from Columbia University. Professionally, Joe started in the education field, teaching in the East Orange, NJ Public Schools. He moved to school administration in Madison, Springfield, Caldwell-West Caldwell and retired as Superintendent of Schools in Ridgefield, NJ in 1985.
Joseph was most proud of being one of the founders of The Bridge, Inc. (in Essex County) over 30 years ago. A center for youth drug-abuse counseling and treatment, it began with private donations and operates today with private and public funding in Essex County. He was also a Founding Director of the Essex Valley School in West Caldwell, NJ. It has been in operation since 1972 as a non-profit Middle and High School for students with emotional and behavioral disabilities. Joe’s work ethic, integrity and dedication to community positively affected many lives.
As avid boaters, Joe and Peg made their annual family run to New England in the summer, stopping at many different ports along the way, Joe’s favorite being Vineyard Haven on Martha’s Vineyard. He was Commander of the Northern New Jersey Power Squadron – part of the National Organization that teaches Boating Safety. Joe was also a Life Member of the Long Branch Ice Boat & Yacht Club. Serving as Trustee and Membership Chairman for many years, his favorite activity was the Wednesday lunch crew when they served “Gourmet Lunch” at the clubhouse promptly at noon for the low, low price of only $5.00!
Joe was also proud of serving his country as an Aviation Electrician’s Mate 3rd Class in the United States Navy during World War II. He was re-called to active duty during the Korean War in 1951.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Peg, and their five children, Joseph Anderson, Jr. (Toni), Neil Anderson (Ellie), Kathryn Turcotte (Jay), Tracy Anderson (Chris Connolly), and Jon Anderson (Heidi), and their eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends on Sunday July 25, 2021 from 1-3pm at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals 145 St. Catherine Blvd. Toms River, NJ. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday July 27, 2021 at 11:30am at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow to BG William C Doyle Veterans Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ.
