Explore Jersey City street art on bike

CANVS, the Jersey City Mural Arts Program, Mana Public Arts, and TimesUp New York will guide you through the different neighborhoods of Jersey City and the street art that connects them on Sunday, Aug 29. Street art enthusiast Simon Kellman will lead the tour.

Riders interested can download the CANVS Street Art app to get started. The group will meet at the Grove Street Path Station at 11:30 a.m. Look out for a CANVS sign.

You can bring your own bike or reserve a Citi bike in Jersey City in advance. It is recommended to arrive 30 minutes early to meet with the crew and prepare. The tour begins at noon. The length of the ride is estimated at 2.5 hours and will finishing at Hamilton Park around 2:30 p.m.

Community Day to send positive vibes

The Continuous Flow Christian Center is giving back to the community and interjecting a positive message of peace and love with their annual Community Day on Saturday, Aug 28, from 1 to 6 p.m.

There will be activities for all ages, including a mobile video arcade, COVID-19 vaccinations, face painting, a hustle dance contest, performers, and vendors.

The event will be held on Monticello Avenue between Belmont and Jewett Avenue.

Departed Art Night celebrates art with beer

Departed Soles Brewery and Made To Measure Events will hold Departed Art Night on Wednesday, Sept. 1, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Departed Soles Brewing Company, 150 Bay St., #2a, Jersey City.

Departed Art Night celebrates art and art in craft at the Departed Soles Tasting Room. A galactic vinyl will be painted during the event while guests can relax and enjoy crafted beers.

Renee from MTM will guide the class through the painting steps and host the night’s activities. The event includes art supplies.

7th annual 5k run in memory of Jorge Oliveira

The 7th Annual 5K Run/Walk in Memory of SSG Jorge Oliveira will take place on Saturday, Aug. 28, with sign-in and registration at 8 a.m. and the run/walk beginning at 9 a.m.

Registration fees are $20 per person in advance or $25 per person the day of the race. Proceeds will benefit the SSG Jorge Oliveira Scholarship Fund, which is awarded to a graduating Kearny High School senior.

Dogs are also allowed to participate, with a doggie water station and treats provided for the run.

New Jersey Army National Guard Staff Sergeant Jorge M. Oliveira was 33 when he died in 2011 from injuries he suffered during an attack on his unit in the Paktika province in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said yesterday. The Newark soldier, who was also an Essex County sheriff’s detective, is at least the 140th service member with ties to New Jersey to die in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq since 2001.

Monthly flea market returns

The North Bergen Monthly Flea Market returns on Sunday, Aug. 29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Bergenline Avenue, between 90th and 79th streets, on the sidewalk outside of J. Braddock Hudson County Park.

Hosted by the North Bergen Community Police and JC Promotions Inc., proceeds will be donated to the Special Olympics. Admission is free.

Stand-up comedy in Jersey City and Hoboken

Stand-up Sundays continue at the Brightside Tavern this Sunday, Aug. 29, with another new lineup hosted by Rich Kiamco at 6 p.m. This week’s show will feature Comedy Central’s Aaron Kominds-Smith, Cash Cab’s Christiana Jackson, and Sirius XM’s Angela Cobb.

Then, at Finnegan’s Pub in Hoboken, Showboken Stand Up Comedy Night takes place on Thursday, Sept. 2, from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Seating is limited so it is recommended to arrive prior to showtime to get a seat. There will be food and drink table service all night. The lineup includes Jim McVay, John Magz, Scott Holt, Natalie Cuomo, Vin Vitale, Mike Lemme.

Creative workshop will teach you to customize and upcyle

If you have clothes that no longer make you happy and want to learn about indigenous cultures, Mode Remade, TKCreations101, and TINKUNAKUY NJ, will hold a Creative Upcycling Workshop on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. You can bring your own clothes or purchase some hand-picked t-shirts on-site to customize and upcycle.

The event will teach you how to create one-of-a-kind items using plants and flowers, camouflage unintentional stains with intentionally placed colors, andturn your old shirt or jeans into a fun accessory. Children will learn simple hand stitches and will make their own bracelets and tote bags out of upcycled fabrics, learn some of the fundamental words and phrases of an indigenous language native to South America in an interactive setting, and see a hand-made tortilla demonstration by Mama Lupe.

Groove on Grove goes back to school

Groove on Grove kicked off this past June with free live performances at the Grove Street PATH Plaza. Now they’re gearing up to go back to school with their annual Back to School Special showcasing young emerging artists on Wednesday, Sept. 1, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The evening will feature performances by Sofia Oro and the Golden Girls, the Hoboken School of Rock Band, and Tim Welsch Vocal School Students among others.

The Grove Street Plaza is adjacent to the Grove Street PATH Station.
