According to the grand jury, O’Connor was arrested in New Jersey in October 1984 for sexually molesting a 14-year-old child. The alleged abuse occurred in Connor’s home in the Diocese of Camden, when he was a theology teacher and golf coach at Bishop Eustace Preparatory School in Pennsauken.
The report said Connor never went to trial because lawyers for the Diocese of Camden negotiated a pre-trial intervention with the Cape May County Prosecutor’s office. Connor was to admit to sexual molestation and have his record erased if he was not re-arrested within a year.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Diocese of Pittsburgh in 2015 reached a “five-figure” settlement with a man who claimed he was sexually abused as a youth by Connor. He alleged the priest was brought into the diocese by then-Bishop Anthony Bevilacqua, despite knowing his history and risk of sexual predatory behavior.
