How the S2 School Funding Formula impacts Ocean, Monmouth Schools – wobm.com

It’s been up for debate since Governor Chris Christie was in office on how to best handle schools that are underfunded and help them out.

The approach some of the lawmakers in Trenton came up with is known as the S2 School Funding Formula, which helps the underfunded districts but also takes money away from districts said to be overfunded.

Those overfunded districts are now losing hundreds of thousands and in some cases millions as a result.

Some since the onset of the idea, some school districts have welcomed the S2 School Funding Formula so they could have the funding to update buildings, get necessary supplies, etc.

The districts losing money are not saying underfunded districts shouldn’t get additional funds, but that those funds shouldn’t be coming from them, as explained in 2019 by Michael Harris who is the head of the Support Our Students initiative.

That year, 71 school districts from across the state drove to Trenton to plead with lawmakers to reverse their funding decision.

From the Jersey Shore…Brick, Jackson, Lavallette, Little Egg Harbor, Manchester, Point Pleasant Beach, Point Pleasant Borough and Toms River from Ocean County and Eatontown, Freehold Regional, Keansburg, Manalapan-Englishtown, Monmouth Regional, Neptune, Roosevelt, Tinton Falls and Ocean from Monmouth County all went to the Statehouse.

Flash forward to 2021, school districts losing funds continue pushing for changes to the formula and to develop a formula that works for all districts more fairly.

These 10 districts are losing the most from Ocean and Monmouth Counties, as previously reported by Townsquare Media News Reporter Michael Symons.
