Honor a Veteran Committee to honor William Satter – Hudson Valley 360
HUDSON — The Columbia County Veterans Committee will be honoring Tech Sgt. William John Satter of Ghent at 9 a.m. Oct. 18 in the Supervisor’s Chambers, 401 State St., Hudson. The public is invited.
William John Satter was born to Eugene and Marie (Schaible) Satter on Sept. 29, 1928 in Essex County, Newark, NJ. He graduated from Wainwright High School where he studied auto mechanics. Living in Newark, he worked as an auto mechanic after graduation.
Satter was inducted into the United States Army on Jan. 23, 1951 in Newark, NJ and after Basic Training he received training in the field artillery. Although he had a great dread of heights, he completed jump school at Fort Benning and earned the coveted silver jump wings of a paratrooper.
Tech. Sgt. William Satter was assigned to the First Army. Recognizing his skills as a leader and as a mechanic, his commanding officer assigned him to Headquarters Battery 150 in the AAA Battalion at Fort Dix, NJ. For the remainder of his enlistment he was responsible for maintaining the vehicles that transported field artillery like the 155 cannon. Tech Sgt. William Satter was discharged on Jan. 22, 1953 at Indiantown Gap Military Reservation, Penn. He earned the National Defense Ribbon and Parachute Wings.
He married Veronica Francis McCormack on Aug. 2, 1952 and together they raised three children, William, Kathy and Eileen. Living at 64 Wakeman Ave. in Newark, he became a policeman for the Newark Police Department. He received numerous citations of commendation and retired after 25 years. For the next 15 years he opened a private security business name “Satter Security” and retired in 1996. While living in Columbia County, he was a member of the American Legion in Philmont.
Satter died at the age of 80 on Nov. 29, 2009 and was buried in Gates of Heaven, East Hanover, NJ. He left behind three children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
