Here’s how much NJ Catholic dioceses have paid out to sex abuse victims

Area: Middlesex, Somerset, Hunterdon, Warren
Parishes: 90
Payouts to alleged sex abuse victims: $1.6 million (since 1981)
The Diocese of Metuchen has paid out more than $1.6 million in settlements in sexual harassment cases, though none of the money came directly from parishioners, said Erin Friedlander, a diocese spokeswoman.
“Settlements related to clergy sexual abuse or misconduct in the Diocese of Metuchen since its founding nearly 37 years ago total $1,633,667 and were paid through insurance reserves,” Friedlander said.
Like all Catholic dioceses, the Diocese of Metuchen has adopted a policy of reporting all sexual abuse allegations to local police or prosecutor’s offices.
“The Diocese of Metuchen maintains our longstanding agreement with law enforcement and our shared commitment to pursue truth and justice in all matters brought forth regarding the abuse of a minor by clergy, no matter the length of time that has passed since the alleged actions occurred and no matter the rank or status of the person accused,” Friedlander said.
