Girl, 6, was jumping on her bed before fatal fall from apartment window in Newark: officials

NEWARK, N.J. — A 6-year-old girl who died after falling out a window at her Newark home had been jumping on her bed just before she fell, officials said Tuesday.

The incident happened around 11:40 p.m. at a building on 14th Avenue near South 16th Street in Newark, local officials say.

The child has been identified as Yodia Encarnacion.

She was initially said to be critically injured after falling out a window.

Essex County Prosecutors Office officials later said she died from her injuries at the hospital.

Yodia fell out of a window while jumping on her bed with other children at her family’s apartment, according to officials.

The location is a three-story building, with apartments above a grocery store, images of the scene show.

The investigation is active and ongoing. No criminal charges have been filed at this time.
