Fairfield Police Install and Inspect Dozens of Car Seats at Annual Event
FAIRFIELD, NJ — More than 40 car seats were either inspected or installed in the Target parking lot as the Fairfield Police Department and Target partnered once again for the township’s annual child car seat installation event.
“We are from New York City, and we are very impressed that Fairfield does child car seat installations,” said Susan Lape Roberts. “New York has nothing like this. I am due to have a baby in October, and when I saw this on Facebook, we decided to stop by Target after visiting a relative in Fairfield to get our infant seat installed properly.”
Sgt. Christopher Niemiec of the Fairfield Police Department, who was instrumental in organizing this event, said the mission of the event is “to protect children and ensure that they are properly restrained in vehicles to avoid serious or life-threatening injuries.”
“Children spend a lot of time traveling in vehicles,” said Niemiec, who has been involved in Child Passenger Safety (CPS) since 2003 when he became a CPS Technician and then an instructor in 2006. “Target has been supporting us for over 15 years. We had CPS technicians from the Wayne Police Department, Verona Police Department, Montville Police Department and Bloomfield Fire Department.”
In addition to the certified CPS technicians that assisted with the event, Safe Kids of Northern New Jersey and AAA sponsored the initiative. According to Niemiec, the Montville Police Explorers and West Essex Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which services the Caldwells, Fairfield, Essex Fells and Roseland, were also vital to the success of the event, both handing out paperwork and registering child seats to ensure they were not recalled.
Fairfield’s Class 2 Special Police Officers Felipe Maldonado, Rick Alves, John Seragusa and Raymond Kassas provided additional traffic safety for the event.
The Montville Police Explorers who helped included Montville Police Explorer Sgt. Joey Cirkus, Explorer Lt. Peter Gruca, Explorer Connor Olson and Explorer Anthony Schulman.
