Essex County Man Fatally Shot 2, Arrested After Standoff: ECPO – Newark, NJ Patch
ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — An Essex County man has been accused of fatally shooting two people in Newark and Orange, authorities announced Tuesday.
According to the Essex County Prosecutors Office, Michael Mayse, 33, of Newark, was arrested Monday night after a brief standoff with police in a residential neighborhood of Newark.
Mayse, who had barricaded himself inside a home, was taken into custody without further incident. No shots were fired and nobody was injured, prosecutors said.
Authorities have charged Mayse with two murders, prosecutors said.
According to prosecutors, Mayse fatally shot Keyshawn Jones, 23, of Newark, at 4:54 a.m. on Dec. 15 in an apartment on the 900-block of Franklin Avenue. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:38 a.m.
Mayse is also accused of shooting Shakur Cole, 35, of Newark, at 12:50 a.m. on Nov. 9 at a home on Central Avenue in Orange. Cole was pronounced dead at 1:11 a.m., prosecutors said.
In addition to two counts of murder, authorities charged Mayse with multiple weapons offenses.
