BLOOMFIELD, NJ – During its Wednesday, April 10, 2019, meeting at Bloomfield Town Hall the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored Ryan Smircich of Bloomfield High School for being named the 2019 Region 3 District 9 Wrestling Coach of the Year.
The Commendation was sponsored by District 5 Freeholder Carlos Pomares of Bloomfield, along with Freeholder President Brendan Gill of Montclair. Freeholder Pomares congratulated Coach Smircich on his successful season, and thanked him for his mentorship of the student athletes he has coached.
Ryan Smircich is the Head Wrestling Coach, and 9th grade English Teacher, at Bloomfield High School and was awarded the 2019 Region 3 District 9 Wrestling Coach of the Year. In just his second year as Head Coach, he expanded the roster from 23 to 62 wrestlers. From his first day on Bloomfield High School coaching staff, he was mentored by legendary coach Sammy Fusaro and is extremely grateful to continue receiving his mentorship today.
Ryan was also a successful wrestler in his own right. During his sophomore year in high school, he earned a varsity spot on Hopatcong High School’s wrestling team in the late 90’s. He put forth the extra time and work necessary to wrestle for a Top 20 team, and was successful enough to continue wrestling in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference at Kutztown University.
He credits many others who contributed to his team’s success, including: the support and efficient work of the school administration and staff; a recreation department dedicated to the students; his assistant coaches who he says are selfless; and most importantly, the students and their parents.
Coach Smircich lives in Bloomfield where he met his wife, Dr. Pamela Smircich, and they have 2 small children, O.J. and Charlie. Friends, family, members of the Bloomfield Board of Education, and members of the Bloomfield Town Council were all on hand to wish Ryan well and congratulate him on his great accomplishment.
