Essex County Fairies: Stand Up And Be Counted – Millburn, NJ Patch

MILLBURN, NJ – In order to generate awareness for the upcoming 2020 census a group of local officials are holding the world’s first fairy census in the South Mountain Reservation on Friday.

The Children’s Mock Census of Woodland Fairies at the South Mountain Reservation Fairy Trail include a Proclamation Ceremony, followed by the World’s First Fairy Census at the South Mountain Reservation Fairy Trail. Concurrent to the World’s First Fairy Trail Census, the Millburn Free Public Library will host a Census Jobs Fair for the public, to recruit up to 63,000 New Jersey residents.

According to orgaizers, the event will promote education and awareness of the upcoming decennial Census and with the 2020 Census is fast approaching the aim is to educate, engage and motivate Essex County residents to complete the census and to apply for Census-related jobs.

The event is set to begin at 10 a.m. on Friday at the South Mountain Reservation, Locust Grove, 197 Glen Ave. and last until noon. A rain date is scheduled for Oct. 25. The mile-long trail is located near the Locust Grove picnic area of the Essex County South Mountain Reservation, just a short walk from the suburban shops of downtown Millburn.

Nestled in a rustic, wooded area of the reservation, the trail includes an entire village of handcrafted “fairy houses” hidden away in the nooks and crannies of the surrounding forest – all built from natural materials such as twigs, moss and rocks. In true Frank Lloyd Wright fashion, the tiny, handcrafted homes blend almost seamlessly into the woods, always a half-step hidden behind the nearest tree root or boulder.

Scheduled to be in attendance:

• NJ Secretary of State Tahesha Way
• Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders Brendan Gill and Carlos Pomares
• Essex County Administrator Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr.
• Millburn Mayor Diane Thall-Eglow
• Census Bureau, New York Region, Lisa Moore

The event is being organized by the SOMA Action Complete Count Committee (CCC), the Essex County Board of Freeholders, the Essex County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, The Township of Millburn, the Millburn Free Public Library, and the South Mountain Conservancy.
