Essex County Democrats Vastly Outnumber GOP Peers: 2018 Election – Bloomfield, NJ Patch

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — It’s a taken-for-granted political axiom that there are more Democrats than Republicans in Essex County. But according to the latest voter registration stats from the state, the imbalance now stands at an eye-popping five-to-one.

On Sept. 30, the New Jersey Department of State released voter registration totals by party, district and county. According to the election data, there are 260,275 registered Democrats in Essex County, as opposed to 50,263 Republicans… about 5.17 Democrats for each of their GOP peers.

It’s the state’s second-largest blue/red divide, ranking only behind Hudson County, which has a 5.8 Democrat-to-Republican ratio (197,978 to 34,119).

There are also 193,070 unaffiliated voters in Essex County, as well as thousands of third-party members:

  • New Jersey Libertarian Party – 479
  • New Jersey Conservative Party – 411
  • Constitution Party – 539
  • Green Party – 384
  • Socialist Party of New Jersey – 214
  • Natural Law Party – 194
  • Reform Party of New Jersey – 78
