Essex County College Announces Special Spring Hybrid Session – TAPinto.net
NEWARK, NJ – Essex County College is launching a special spring session which would allow more eligible students to pursue higher education tuition-free.
Starting May 28 until June 20, Essex County will offer hybrid format general education course. The hybrid course combines in-person class time and online course work.
The special session comes shortly after Governor Phil Murphy expanded the Community College Opportunity Grant (CCOG) program that provides free tuition for eligible students to all 19 community colleges in the state starting the spring 2019 semester.
“We are happy and extremely supportive of CCOG’s expansion and express gratitude to Gov. Murphy,” ECC President, Dr. Anthony E. Munroe said. “As an open-access institution focused on academic excellence, the expansion will allow many more of our students to continue their education.”
CCOG covers tuition and most fees for students whose household income does not exceed $45,000 after all other financial aid has been applied.
Spring I and Spring II semester sessions at ECC started in January and will end in April. Currently, 1,500 eligible students qualify for CCOG under state guidelines, but the college wants to expand the possibilities of what tuition-free college can provide to more students.
The program could be beneficial for new students starting out and current students who want to accelerate toward graduation.
Access to the opportunity grant funds will allow ECC to continue to provide an education to many more students, a representative wrote in a statement. Students’ academic success will improve their individual lives, their community and ultimately move New Jersey forward the statement said.
“Essex County College has always advocated on behalf of all our students. The expansion of CCOG to include Essex is a big boost for our students,” Munroe said. “By enrolling in our Spring Special Session, these students will stay on track to graduate and move on toward successful careers.”
