Environmentalists Plan Rally Near Roseland Compressor Station – Caldwells, NJ Patch
ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Local protest against a controversial gas compressor station in Essex County will continue with a public event and rally on Saturday, Sept. 14, activists say.
According to Roseland Against the Compressor Station (RACS), which is spearheading the event, there are a full day of activities planned near the Williams/Transco natural gas compressor station on Eagle Rock Avenue in Roseland.
In the morning, RACS members plan to take part in a Roseland Borough Council-organized cleanup of a nature trail behind Roseland Noecker Elementary School. (Learn more about this local event)
Afternoon activities will include:
- 12:30 to 2 pm – Pizza and potluck lunch, children’s activities, showing of new “Roseland Not Gasland” Powerpoint slides; VFW hall #2619, 52 Eisenhower Parkway
- 2 to 2:15 p.m. – March (1/4 mile) from VFW hall to compressor station site on Eagle Rock Avenue
- 2:15 to 3:30 p.m. – Rally with speakers and music, including Roseland Mayor James Spango, Carolyn Elefant (Livingston native and community rights lawyer), Sister Danelle McCarthy (of Dominican Sisters of Caldwell), Cassandra Worthington (Roseland resident and Food and Water Watch member), Jeff Tittel (NJ Sierra Club), Tina Weishaus (350NJ), Ted Glick (Roseland Against the Compressor Station), Paula Rogovin (Don’t Gas the Meadowlands) and the Solidarity Singers of the NJ Industrial Union Council.

Environmentalists and several local officials have been decrying Williams/Transco’s expansion of its Roseland compressor station for years, accusing the facility of being a ticking environmental time bomb.
The energy giant has disputed their allegations, claiming that the expansion is safe and is needed to help provide New Jersey with more than half of its natural gas.
