DWI Charge For Newark Woman After Crash With Kids In Car – Newark, NJ Patch

NEWARK, NJ — A Newark woman was charged with driving while intoxicated after she crashed her car into a building early Friday morning, injuring herself and her two children, authorities said.

The crash took place around 1:15 a.m. on the 800-block of Frelinghuysen Avenue, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.

When police and fire crews arrived at the scene, they removed an 8-year-old girl, a 13-year-old boy and the driver, Sonya Harrison, 43, of Newark, from the car.

The 8-year-old suffered fractures to both legs and to her pelvis, the 13-year-old suffered a wrist injury, and Harrison suffered facial fractures, police said.

Emergency responders transported each injured person to University Hospital for treatment. As of Friday afternoon, Harrison and the girl are reportedly in serious condition. The boy was treated and released, authorities said.

Harrison, who is the mother of the injured children, faces charges of driving while intoxicated and endangering the welfare of children. She was also issued summonses for driving without a seat beat and other motor vehicle violations, police said.
