UPDATE: ‘I killed both of them. Just arrest me, bro,’ corrections officer told cop after he shot girlfriend, her friend, authorities say

A Hudson County corrections officer was charged Wednesday with shooting his girlfriend and another woman to death in Newark, authorities said.

John Menendez, 23, of West New York, is charged with two counts of murder and weapons offenses in the deaths Tuesday night of Anna Shpilberg and Luiza Shinkarevskaya. Menendez has worked for about the past year at the Hudson County jail in Kearny.

The women, both 40 and from Morris County, were found fatally shot in different parts of Newark, according to acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II.

Shinkarevskaya, of Riverdale, was found about 9:53 p.m. suffering from a gunshot wound in the 100 block of Haynes Avenue near Newark Liberty International Airport, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Shpilberg, of Randolph, who was in a relationship with Menendez, was found dead about 9:55 p.m. in the passenger seat of her vehicle in the area of Edison Place and Bruen Street near Newark Penn Station, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Public records show Shpilberg was a registered dental hygienist. Her LinkedIn page states she works for a dental office on Staten Island, New York.

“The preliminary investigation indicates these are two related homicides at two different scenes,” Stephens said in a statement.

A spokesman for Hudson County did not immediately respond to a call and email seeking comment on the arrest.
