Coronavirus in N.J.: What’s reopening, what concerts, festivals and shows are rescheduled, canceled. (Sept. 2 – NJ.com

The T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center in Red Bank will open its doors Friday, Sept. 25, for the exhibit, “A Love Letter to Count Basie: From The Great Migration to The Harlem Renaissance.”

A VIP, socially distanced opening reception will be held on the center’s front lawn from 6 to 9 p.m., and attendees will be escorted inside the center to view the exhibit and featured items.

More than 1,000 Basie artifacts are archived at the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University in Newark. This is the first time the Count Basie collection will be shared publicly since its 2018 acquisition.

“This exhibit is especially fitting considering the racial tension we are experiencing in the nation,” said T. Thomas Fortune Foundation Vice President Gilda Rogers. “Count Basie’s music broke through racial barriers and brought people together, during a time of lawful segregation in America.”

William Paterson University’s student percussion and voice ensembles will team for “It Will Be True,” a free outdoor concert 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, on the Wayne campus.

The two groups have collaborated to write new works for voice and percussion based on social justice-themed texts sourced from William Paterson community members. The performance will take place on the plaza outside of the Shea Center on campus, located at 300 Pompton Road.

ATLANTIC COUNTY

Atlantic City casinos gaming rooms have reopened, but no major entertainment events are planned yet until mid-October at the soonest. Harrah’s Resort is hosting weekly “Bayside Rock Live” on the marina with tribute bands through Oct. 23, with general admission “distanced pedestrian spots” assigned to ticketholders.

BERGEN COUNTY

All scheduled entertainment events at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford have been canceled or pushed to next year and Gov. Murphy has mandated that Jets and Giants football games at the stadium will be played without fans in attendance. For information, visit metlifestadium.com.

Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood has canceled, postponed or rescheduled shows through Nov. 4 and has canceled the remaining events in its “Sunset Drive-In” outdoor concert series at the Westfield Garden State Plaza shopping center in Paramus.   • The Historic Prison Museum, the Warden’s House Gallery and the County Lyceum of History and Natural Sciences reopened Tuesday, and will operate on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Family groups of six or less visitors can also schedule tours on days the prison museum is not open.
  • The Smithville Mansion’s Annex Art Gallery, the Worker’s House Museum and Gallery reopened Wednesdsay and will operate on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. The Burlington County Underground Railroad Association Museum will reopen Wednesday, Sept. 30, and will operate during the same hours. It will also open at other times for private tours for groups of up to six persons. Access to Smithville Mansion will be limited to groups of up to six visitors who preregister with the Friends of the Mansion at Smithville.

The Battleship New Jersey is temporarily closed, in part due to revenue loss caused by the pandemic.

Cape May MAC (Museums+Arts+Culture) — formerly Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities — has reopened the Cape May Lighthouse and recommenced tours and “Breakfast with Pirates” activities.
