Chatham Township Hosts Out of the Darkness Suicide Awareness And Fundraising Walk Event

CHATHAM TOWNSHIP, NJ – Chatham Township Mayor, Curt Ritter, partnered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, to host the “Out Of The Darkness” walk to raise funds and awareness about mental illness and suicide prevention.
“Over the past three years, we’ve raised over $200,000, which is truly remarkable,” said Mayor Ritter
AFSP New Jersey Area Director, Elizabeth Roithmayr-Clemens, noted: “We have nine different color beads. Every color represents why you are walking today.. and it helps signify to someone else – where almost no words are needed.”
“These walks are important.. I’m glad to see there’s a wide range of ages, because suicide affects young people, teens, veterans, senior citizens – it affects every stage of the population,” added Chatham Borough Council President, Len Resto.
Local resident, Bruce H., said: “It’s an important issue… I think this also encourages people to talk about it with each other, and bring the whole issue of mental illness out of the darkness.”
