Honor a Veteran Committee to honor William Satter – Hudson Valley 360

HUDSON — The Columbia County Veterans Committee will be honoring Tech Sgt. William John Satter of Ghent at 9 a.m. Oct. 18 in the Supervisor’s Chambers, 401 State St., Hudson. The public is invited.

William John Satter was born to Eugene and Marie (Schaible) Satter on Sept. 29, 1928 in Essex County, Newark, NJ. He graduated from Wainwright High School where he studied auto mechanics. Living in Newark, he worked as an auto mechanic after graduation.

Satter was inducted into the United States Army on Jan. 23, 1951 in Newark, NJ and after Basic Training he received training in the field artillery. Although he had a great dread of heights, he completed jump school at Fort Benning and earned the coveted silver jump wings of a paratrooper.

Tech. Sgt. William Satter was assigned to the First Army. Recognizing his skills as a leader and as a mechanic, his commanding officer assigned him to Headquarters Battery 150 in the AAA Battalion at Fort Dix, NJ. For the remainder of his enlistment he was responsible for maintaining the vehicles that transported field artillery like the 155 cannon. Tech Sgt. William Satter was discharged on Jan. 22, 1953 at Indiantown Gap Military Reservation, Penn. He earned the National Defense Ribbon and Parachute Wings.

He married Veronica Francis McCormack on Aug. 2, 1952 and together they raised three children, William, Kathy and Eileen. Living at 64 Wakeman Ave. in Newark, he became a policeman for the Newark Police Department. He received numerous citations of commendation and retired after 25 years. For the next 15 years he opened a private security business name “Satter Security” and retired in 1996. While living in Columbia County, he was a member of the American Legion in Philmont.

Satter died at the age of 80 on Nov. 29, 2009 and was buried in Gates of Heaven, East Hanover, NJ. He left behind three children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

LETTERS: Three New Jersey Board of Education Members Endorse Shannon Cuttle – The Village Green

The following are three letters of support for the candidacy of Shannon Cuttle for re-election to the South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education. According to Cuttle’s campaign manager, Annemarie Maini, all three are current school board members in other districts; however, they are writing on behalf of themselves and not as representatives of their boards or their districts.

To the Editor:

My name is Shane Berger. I am a Certified Board Leader and veteran of over 200 BOE meetings and rarely do you see the combination of tenacity and compassion that Shannon Cuttle possesses. I have seen them strongly advocate for all students, at the local, county and state level. Bring back Mx. Cuttle and continue the progress moving forward for students.

Shane Berger
Bloomfield

To the Editor:

I am a NJSBA Certified Board Leader, and currently serve on the Bloomfield Board of Education, NJSBA Essex County School Board Association and the Board of Directors Essex County Rep.  These opinions expressed are mine alone.

Shannon Cuttle is a passionate educational thought leader in their work with Safe Schools Action Network and as a South Orange-Maplewood School Board Member.  Shannon has promoted safe and inclusive spaces for all students across New Jersey.  Shannon presented at the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) Workshop 2019, on “Developing an Inclusive School District for LGBTQ+ Students” which I attended and was well-received and presented a model that other districts across the state could emulate. Shannon and the Maplewood-South Orange School District took the lead and put forth a groundbreaking resolution for the May 2021 NJSBA Delegate Assembly on language that explicitly names affectional/sexual orientation and gender identity/expression as protected classes within the NJSBA organization’s Manual of Positions and Policies on Education.  For all of Shannon’s service and leadership, Shannon deserves to be returned to the SOMA Board of Education this November 2, 2021.

Michael Heller
Bloomfield

To the Editor:

Shannon is an exceptional human being. As a fellow school board member, I have come to know them as one who tirelessly fights for educational equity for all students, especially for the most vulnerable students. The level of commitment and dedication Shannon has exhibited in their work is unparalleled, not just in their first term as an elected school board member, but throughout their life as an educator, an activist, an advocate, and a policy maker. Shannon’s commitment to a better world, a more equitable world, a world where all children would have the same access and opportunities, where nobody gets left behind and everyone matters has been the driving force and motivation of their work and sometimes at much personal sacrifice. As a person, Shannon embodies the best of human beings. There is no one prouder I can call my fellow school board colleague and friend. There is no one more qualified to make decisions about our children where everyone matters. On November 2, 2021, re-elect Shannon to the South Orange Maplewood  school board, all students deserve someone like Shannon on their side every day.

Have You Tried This Newark Bakery? Kamala Harris Has – Patch.com

NEWARK, NJ — Due to the pandemic, Tonnie Rozier mostly sees takeout orders from his bakery on Halsey Street in Newark these days. But that didn’t stop Rozier from getting a special, in-person visit from three of the Democratic Party’s biggest names last week: Vice President Kamala Harris, U.S. Sen. Cory Booker and Gov. Phil Murphy.

On Friday, the vice president visited Montclair State University to speak about President Joe Biden’s $3.5 trillion federal spending plan, including its child care provisions. She also visited the COVID-19 vaccine center at Essex County College in Newark.

On her way back to Newark Airport, Harris made a short trip to Tonnie’s Minis for cupcakes and cake along with Booker and Murphy.

“In Newark, I always go where Sen. Booker recommends,” Harris quips in a video shared to the shop’s Instagram page.

Rozier told NJ Advance Media that the visit came unexpectedly. After he got a call asking if they had cupcakes and if he was in the shop, Secret Service agents arrived at his door about 10 minutes later.

“It was amazing to me,” he said, adding that he’s a “big fan of this particular administration.”

While Harris’ visit may be her first taste of the treats at Tonnie’s Minis, the local bakery has been among the city’s worst-kept secrets for years. As seen on its Yelp listing:

  • “The cakes are beautiful – moist, tasty, as well as pretty. So many big name bakeries can’t seem to get all those elements right.”
  • “Love it love it! Finally some good cupcakes from a real baker. Moist, flavorful and just the right amount of sweetness. Variety here, they even had my favorite pie Sweet Potato, grabbed a few to eat while working. Grabbed some mini cupcakes to take home. Staff was nice and friendly, this will be my new go to spot.”
  • “I’ve literally been taking all of my family members here one by one when they come into town lol. No more traveling to NY to other bakeries for me. I live a little too close and find myself buying dessert too often here.”
