MAPLEWOOD, N.J. (WCBS 880/AP) — A man has been charged in the stabbing deaths of his au pair girlfriend and her employer at his suburban home in northern New Jersey.

The Essex County prosecutor’s office said 27-year-old Joseph Porter, of Elizabeth, is charged with two counts of murder, weapons possession charges and criminal restraint.

Police found the body of 40-year-old David Kimowitz inside his Maplewood home on Saturday. His family’s au pair, 26-year-old Karen Bermudez-Rodriguez, was lying in the street and died at a hospital. Both had been stabbed.

According to reports, Bermudez-Rodriguez and Porter were in the process of breaking up at the time of the incident.

Kimowitz owned The Stand Restaurant and Comedy Club in New York’s Union Square.

After news of his death spread, comedians from all over New York mourned him on social media.

Comedian Rich Vos posted that Kimowitz was a “great guy and friend.”

Aaron Berg wrote Kimowitz was “essential to New York,” and Paul Virzi said the news was “just sickening.”

Kimowitz’s wife and children were not home.
