MILLBURN, NJ — Amid the rise of the highly transmissible Delta variant of COVID in the United States, the township of Millburn has updated its guidance for municipal buildings.

Effective Tuesday, the Township of Millburn will require all staff and visitors entering any municipal building to wear a mask, the town announced in an alert Tuesday.

“Effective Aug. 17, the Township will require all staff and visitors entering any municipal building to wear a mask,” they noted. “This revision to our mask policy is based on the updated guidance released by the CDC on June 27, 2021. Although Millburn Township has not seen significant community spread and we have one of the highest vaccination rates in the state, we would like to continue to take precautions and do our part in stopping the spread of COVID-19.”

The mandate applies only to buildings run by the town.

According to the latest figures from Essex County (see the chart above), there were three new cases of coronavirus recorded from Monday to Tuesday of this week, bringing the number of cases among Millburn residents to 863 since the start of the pandemic.

Ten Millburn residents have passed away due to the virus.

The township said, “We will continue to monitor the situation and will accordingly provide any updates to our policy, as they become available. We appreciate your cooperation.”

Essex County gave out 357 booster shots to residents of the county on Monday. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have authorized an additional COVID-19 vaccine dose for a “small, vulnerable group” of immunocompromised people. Third shots for other residents are likely to be authorized later this year.

Vaccinated people may still get sick and spread the virus, but there is a lower chance of hospitalization or death, medical professionals say. The COVID vaccine is 95 percent effective against catching the virus.

More than 618,000 Americans have now died from COVID (see which states have the highest recent death rates here). Most of those hospitalized with the virus are unvaccinated, say officials at the hospitals.

Children under 12 are not yet eligible to receive the vaccine.

In New Jersey, Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli said last week that area doctors are concerned about the rising rate of pediatric hospitalizations from COVID-19. READ MORE: Rise In Child COVID Hospitalizations Prompts Vaccination Plea
